Leaf-mine: A gallery along the edge of the leaf leading to a circular blotch, from which a case is cut leaving a round hole (British leafminers, as O. signifer).

Larva: The larva is illustrated in (British leafminers, as O. signifer) and Nederlandse bladmineerders.

Pupa: Details unknown.

Distribution in Britain: Widespread including Bedford, Berks, Bucks, Cumberland, Derby, Dorset, Dunbarton, East Cornwall, East Gloucester, East Kent, Hereford, Kirkudbright, Mid-west York, Middlesex, North Essex, North Somerset, Northampton, Notts, South Hants, South Wilts, Stafford, Stirling, Surrey, Warwick, West Gloucester, West Kent, West Norfolk, West Sussex and Worcester (NBN Gateway distribution map, as Rynchaenus avellanae - BRERC, GiGL, NE and SNH).

Distribution elsewhere: Europe including Bulgaria, ? Corsica, Czech Republic, Danish mainland, French mainland, Germany, Italian mainland, Moldova, Norwegian mainland, Poland, Russia - East and Northwest, Sardinia, Sicily, Slovakia, Switzerland Yugoslavia. Also recorded in the Near East (Alonso-Zarazaga in Fauna Europaea).
