DESCHAMPSIA. Hair-grasses. [Poaceae]

Four species of Deschampsia are recorded in Britain. These include the native species and subspecies Alpine Hair-grass (D. cespitosa alpina), Bog Hair-grass (D. setacea), Small-flowered Hair-grass (D. cespitosa parviflora), Tufted Hair-grass (D. cespitosa cespitosa) and Wavy Hair-grass (D. flexuosa).

Five dipterous miners, the agromyzids Agromyza lucida, Cerodontha imbuta, Cerodontha pygmaea, Chromatomyia nigra and Liriomyza richteri, are recorded on Deschampsia in Britain. Miners on grasses should be reared, whenever possible, to confirm their identity.

Elsewhere the agromyzids Agromyza albipennis, Agromyza lucida, Agromyza nigripes, Cerodontha pygmaea, Cerodontha imbuta, Cerodontha pygmaea, Chromatomyia fuscula, Chromatomyia nigra, Metopomyza flavonotata, Liriomyza flaveola and Liriomyza orbona are recorded mining Deschampsia.

Five non-dipterous miners are recorded on Deschampsia in Britain (see below).

Elsewhere three additional British non-dipterous miners are recorded on Deschampsia (see below).

Key for the identification of the known Diptera mines in Britain.

#> Details of mine unknown. Pupation internal. Puparium brown

Cerodontha (Poemyza) imbuta (Meigen) [Agromyzidae].

#> Details of mine unknown. Puparium reddish

Liriomyza richteri Hering [Agromyzidae].

1> Larvae either singly or several in leaf, then forming large blotch, feeding first up and then down the leaf. Pupation external. Puparium frequently black or dark red, adhering to the leaf near end of mine.

Agromyza lucida Hendel [Agromyzidae].

->Normally several larvae feed together. Pupation in the mine. Puparium shining black.

Cerodontha (Poemyza) pygmaea (Meigen)
[Agromyzidae].

->Mine long, narrow, whitish. Pupation internal. Puparium yellowish-brown, anterior spiracles projecting through the epidermis.
