ECHINOPS. Globe Thistles [Asteraceae]


Five species of Echinops are recorded in Britain. All species are introduced and include Blue Globe-thistle (E. bannaticus) and Glandular Globe-thistle (E. sphaerocephalus).

Two dipterous miners, the agromyzids Chromatomyia 'atricornis' and Phytomyza bipunctata, are recorded on Echinops in Britain.

Elsewhere the agromyzids Chromatomyia 'atricornis' and Phytomyza bipunctata are recorded mining Echinops.

No non-dipterous miners are recorded on Echinops in Britain.

1> Mine linear, whitish, both upper and lower surface. Pupation internal, at the end of the mine, with the anterior spiracles projecting through the epidermis.

Chromatomyia 'atricornis' auctt. [Agromyzidae].

->A narrow, whitish linear mine with frass in a conspicuous, almost unbroken line at alternate sides of the channel. Puparium black.
