ERYNGIUM. Sea-holly and Eryngo. [Apiaceae]

Six species of Eryngium are recorded in Britain. These include the native Sea-holly (E. maritimum) and Field Eryngo (E. campestre).

Field Eryngo (E. campestre) is protected under Schedule 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981.

No Diptera miners are recorded on Eryngium in Britain.

The polyphagous agromyzid Liriomyza huidobrensis has been recorded in quarantine in Britain (Dom Collins (pers. comm.)).

Elsewhere the tephritid Euleia heraclei and the polyphagous agromyzids Chromatomyia horticola, Liriomyza strigata are recorded mining Eryngium.

No non-Diptera miners are recorded on Eryngium in Britain.

A key to the European miners, based on characteristics of the mines, immature stages and where relevant the larval cases, recorded on Eryngium is provided in Bladmineerders van Europa. This includes Chromatomyia horticola, Euleia heraclei, Liriomyza strigata and Dibolia timida.
