ERYNGIUM. Sea-holly and Eryngo. [Apiaceae]

Six species of Eryngium are recorded in Britain. These include the native Sea-holly (E. maritimum) and Field Eryngo (E. campestre).

Field Eryngo (E. campestre) is protected under Schedule 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981.

No dipterous miners are recorded on Eryngium in Britain.

The agromyzid Liriomyza huidobrensis, a polyphagous pest species of ornamental and vegetable crops occasionally intercepted at UK points of entry, is recorded on Eryngium and has been found under glass in England and Wales. All populations have been and continue to be eradicated.

Elsewhere the tephritid Euleia heraclei and the polyphagous agromyzid Liriomyza strigata are recorded mining Eryngium.

No non-dipterous miners are recorded on Eryngium in Britain.
