HONCKENYA. Sea Sandwort. [Caryophyllaceae]


Sea Sandwort (H. peploides) is the only species of Honckenya recorded in Britain. It is a native coastal species.

Only one dipterous miner, the anthomyiid Delia quadripila, is recorded on Honckenya in Britain.

Elsewhere the anthomyiid Delia quadripila is recorded mining Honckenya.

No non-dipterous miners are recorded on Honckenya in Britain.

Key for the identification of the known Diptera mines in Britain.




1> Mine predominantly in the leaves. The beginning of the mine is a full depth corridor lying on the leaf margin, with or without large, black frass grains. The larva goes through the stem, mines leaf after leaf, hollowing these out.
