JUNCUS. Rushes. [Juncaceae]

Forty-eight species of Juncus are recorded in Britain, twenty-four of which are native, including Soft rush (Juncus effusus). Two dipterous miners, the agromyzid Cerodontha luctuosa and the dolichopodid Thrypticus bellus, are recorded on Juncus in Britain. Elsewhere the agromyzids Cerodontha capitata and Cerodontha luctuosa and the dolichopodid Thrypticus bellus are recorded mining Juncus. Five non-dipterous miners are recorded on Juncus in Britain (see below). Elsewhere one additional British non-dipterous miner is recorded on Juncus (see below).

#> Details of mine unknown. Thrypticus bellus Loew [Dolichopodidae]. 1> Elongated, mainly interparenchymal mine in the part of the stem above the flower stalk. Frass in one large mass. Pupation internal. The early generation puparium is pale yellowish, that of the overwintering generation darker, reddish brown Cerodontha (Dizygomyza) luctuosa (Meigen) [Agromyzidae].
