LEMNA. Duckweeds. [Lemnaceae]

Four species of Lemna are recorded in Britain. These include the native Fat Duckweed (L. gibba), Common Duckweed (L. minor) and Ivy-leaved Duckweed (L. trisulca) and the introduced Least Duckweed (L. minuta). Three dipterous miners, the ephydrids Hydrellia albilabris, Hydrellia griseola and Hydrellia mutata are recorded on Lemna in Britain. Elsewhere the ephydrid Hydrellia griseola is recorded mining Lemna. No non-dipterous miners are recorded on Lemna in Britain.

Hydrellia mutata (Zetterstedt) [Ephydridae]. 1> Irregularly formed mine, very shallow and as a result, whitish in colour. In broad leaved plants frequently star-shaped and sometimes a very shallow corridor. In grasses the mine frequently starts in the leaf sheath. The frass is finely grained, initially irregularly spread, later in clumps. The larva may mine more than one leaf. Pupation in separate mine (sometimes even on another plant) without frass.
