MALVA. Mallows. [Malvaceae]

Thirteen species of Malva are recorded in Britain. These include the native Musk-mallow (M. moschata), Dwarf Mallow (M. neglecta) and Common Mallow (M. sylvestris).

Two dipterous miners, the agromyzids Chromatomyia horticola and Liriomyza strigata are recorded on Malva in Britain, although the latter is unconfirmed.

The agromyzids Liriomyza huidobrensis, Liriomyza sativae and Liriomyza trifolii, polyphagous pest species of ornamental and vegetable crops occasionally intercepted at UK points of entry, are recorded on Malva. Liriomyza huidobrensis and Liriomyza trifolii have been found under glass in England and Wales. All populations have been and continue to be eradicated.

Elsewhere the polyphagous agromyzids Chromatomyia horticola, Liriomyza bryoniae, Liriomyza huidobrensis, Liriomyza sativae, Liriomyza strigata and Liriomyza trifolii are recorded mining Malva.

No non-dipterous miners are recorded on Malva in Britain.
