OROBANCHE. Broomrapes. [Orobanchaceae]


Fourteen species of Orobanche are recorded in Britain. These include the native Thyme Broomrape (O. alba), Oxtongue Broomrape (O. artemisiae-campestris), Bedstraw Broomrape (O. caryophyllacea), Knapweed Broomrape (O. elatior), Ivy Broomrape (O. hederae), Common Broomrape (O. minor), Yarrow Broomrape (O. purpurea), Greater Broomrape (O. rapum-genistae) and Thistle Broomrape (O reticulata).

Oxtongue Broomrape (O. artemisiae-campestris), Bedstraw Broomrape (O. caryophyllacea) and Thistle Broomrape (O reticulata) are protected under Schedule 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981.

Ivy Broomrape (O. hederae) is protected in Northern Ireland under Schedule 8 of the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order, 1985.

No dipterous miners are recorded on Orobanche in Britain, but the agromyzid Phytomyza orobanchia is recorded feeding in both the seed-heads and stems of Orobanche spp.

No non-dipterous miners are recorded on Orobanche in Britain.
