PASTINACA. Wild parsnip. [Apiaceae]

Three species of Pastinaca are recorded in Britain. These include the native Wild Parsnip (P. sativa).

Six dipterous miners, the agromyzids Chromatomyia horticola, Phytomyza angelicastri, Phytomyza melana, Phytomyza pastinacae and Phytomyza spondylii and the tephritid Euleia heraclei are recorded on Pastinaca in Britain.

The agromyzids Melanagromyza angeliciphaga and Melanagromyza sativae are recorded boring the stems of Pastinaca and other Apiaceae in Britain and elsewhere.

The agromyzids Liriomyza huidobrensis and Liriomyza trifolii, polyphagous pest species of ornamental and vegetable crops occasionally intercepted at UK points of entry, are recorded on Pastinaca. Both species have been found under glass in England and Wales. All populations have been and continue to be eradicated.

The agromyzid Liriomyza lutea is recorded feeding in the seed-heads of Angelica and Pastinaca in Britain and elsewhere.

Elsewhere the agromyzids Liriomyza bryoniae, Liriomyza huidobrensis, Liriomyza trifoli, Napomyza carotae, Phytomyza heracleana, Phytomyza pastinacae and Phytomyza spondyli and the tephritid Euleia heraclei are recorded mining Pastinaca.

One non-dipterous miner is recorded on Pastinaca in Britain (see below).

-> A short linear mine which considerably widens towards the end, normally starting in the centre of the leaf. Puparium black

Phytomyza melana Hendel [Agromyzidae].

-> A conspicuous, whitish linear mine. Pupation external.

Phytomyza spondylii Robineau-Desvoidy [Agromyzidae].

OR Phytomyza pastinacae Hendel [Agromyzidae].

> An irregular upper surface linear mine, which can widen and become almost blotch like at end. Puparium black
