POTAMOGETON. Pondweeds. [Potomogetonaceae]

Forty-one species and numerous hybrids of Potamogeton are recorded in Britain. All are native and include Shining Pondweed (P. lucens), Broad-leaved Pondweed (P. natans) and Bog Pondweed (P. polygonifolius)

Six dipterous miners, the chironomids Cricotopus brevipalpis, Cricotopus tricinctus and Cricotopus trifasciatus, the drosophilid Scaptomyza griseola and the ephydrids Hydrellia albilabris and Hydrellia griseola are recorded on Potamogeton in Britain.

Elsewhere the ephydrid Hydrellia cochleariae, the chironomid Cricotopus trifasciatus, and the drosophilid Scaptomyza griseola are recorded mining Potamogeton.

One non-dipterous miner is recorded on Potamogeton in Britain (see below).

1> Irregularly formed mine, very shallow and as a result, whitish in colour. In broad leaved plants frequently star-shaped and sometimes a very shallow corridor. In grasses the mine frequently starts in the leaf sheath. The frass is finely grained, initially irregularly spread, later in clumps. The larva may mine more than one leaf. Pupation in separate mine (sometimes even on another plant) without frass. Puparium whitish to dark grey
