SAPONARIA. Soapwort. [Caryophyllaceae]

Five species of Saponaria are recorded in Britain. These include the native Soapwort (S. officinalis) and the introduced Rock Soapwort (S. ocymoides).

Two dipterous miners, the agromyzid Amauromyza flavifrons and the anthomyiid Delia echinata, are recorded on Saponaria in Britain.

See AGROSTEMMA.

The agromyzid Liriomyza huidobrensis, a pest species of ornamental and vegetable crops occasionally intercepted at UK points of entry, has been recorded on Saponaria and has been found under glass in England and Wales. All populations have been and continue to be eradicated.

Elsewhere the agromyzids Amauromyza flavifrons, Liriomyza bryoniae, Liriomyza huidobrensis and Liriomyza strigata and the anthomyiid Delia echinata are recorded mining Saponaria.

No non-dipterous miners are recorded on Saponaria in Britain.
