Celypha woodiana (Barrett, 1882)
[Lepidoptera: Tortricidae]

Brachytaenia woodiana Barrett, 1882. Ent. mon. Mag. 18: 185.
Celypha woodiana
(Barrett, 1882).

Leaf-mine: The larva overwinters in a narrow crescent shaped mine on the the lower leaf surface and then forms a large blotch mine next spring (British leafminers).

In autumn the mine begins as a brown, narrow and inconspicuous, lower-surface corridor. The larva is capable of leaving its mine and restarting elsewhere, possibly in another leaf. In April - May of the following spring a full depth transparant blotch is made, from which most frass is ejected. The mined leaf soon drops, which makes the mine even more difficult to detect (Simpson, 2004a) (Bladmineerders van Europa).

The mine is also illustrated in UKMoths.

Larva: Deep green; described by Bradley et al. (1979a) (Bladmineerders van Europa).

Pupa: Details unknown.

Adult: The adult is illustrated in UKMoths. The male genitalia, but not the female genitalia (check for update), are illustrated by the Lepidoptera Dissection Group.

Distribution in Great Britain and Ireland: A rare miner, being found in old apple orchards in the West of England including Gloucester, South Wales (British leafminers); Herefordshire, North Somerset, West Gloucestershire and Worcestershire (NBN Gateway - N.B. includes Watsonian Vice Counties having publicly available records that fall within or overlap the vice county border at 10km resolution or better i.e. a record for a vice county may relate to an adjacent vice county - for included datasets see NBN Grid map below) and the Channel Is. (Karsholt and van Nieukerken in Fauna Europaea).

NBN Grid map: Note that not all datasets on the NBN Gateway may be available on the map below. If you are an NBN Gateway registered user you can request access for missing datasets via the link 'Open interactive map in new window' below.
