Coleophora follicularis
(Vallot, 1802)

Leaf-mine: Larva mines leaves. On Eupatorium the case is extended at the anal end by adding silk and widened by cutting a ventral gusset. On Inula the case is firstly extended by adding rings of leaf-cuticle at the oral end, before reverting to the method used when on Eupatorium. The full-grown case is 10mm long (British leafminers).

Larva: Details unknown.

Pupa: Details unknown.

Inula conyza Ploughman's-spikenard Nederlandse bladmineerders
Leucanthemum vulgare Oxeye Daisy Nederlandse bladmineerders

Time of year - mines: August to September, then May to June when on Inula. July to August, then April to May when on Eupatorium (British leafminers).

Time of year - adults: June to August (UKMoths).

Distribution in Britain: Known to occur in much of Britain including Devon (Branscombe) (UKMoths) East Cornwall, Hereford, North Hants, Surrey, West Cornwall and West Kent (NBN Gateway distribution map - BRERC, JNCC and NE).

Prior to 1962 both C. follicularis and C. trochilella were thought to be a single species, C. troglodytella. Consequently, distribution is clouded by older records which are not attributed to one or other of the two species.

Also recorded in Republic of Ireland (UKMoths and Karsholt & van Nieukerken in Fauna Europaea).

Distribution elsewhere: Widespread in Europe including Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Danish mainland, Estonia, Finland, French mainland, Germany, Greek mainland, Hungary, Italian mainland, Latvia, North Aegean Is., Poland, Romania, Sicily, Slovakia, Spanish mainland, Sweden, Switzerland and The Netherlands. Also recorded in the Near East (Karsholt & van Nieukerken in Fauna Europaea).

Parasitoids: Unknown.
