Leaf mine: The initial mine is usually in the form of a gallery, which expands to form a blotch. The mine of Metallus pumilus is similar (British leafminers). The mine is also illustrated in Nederlandse bladmineerders.

Larva: Larva with two ventral spots, whereas M. pumilis has two (British leafminers). The larva is also illustrated in Nederlandse bladmineerders.

Pupa: Details unknown.
